Microsoft has announced widespread Dark Mode support for its suite of office applications. The company is distributing an update for the popular Outlook e-mail app, as well as the familiar Word (Word), Excel (Excel), PowerPoint (VirtualPoint), OneDrive virtual drive apps, and the To-Do task app. The browser version (Office.com) will soon also receive a parallel dark state.
According to John Friedman , head of the Office of Design division, developing the dark situation was not a simple matter at all. The development team is required to find design solutions for a completely different color palette, including increasing contrast (contrast), and maintaining consistency in details such as using shade when switching to dark.
The new mode is available for both Android and iOS users. In both versions, the dark mode can be turned on manually through the app’s settings menu, or set the dark mode to run while the entire operating system switches to this mode (usually during the dark hours).
Using dark mode has one distinct advantage when using phones equipped with an OLED screen. Because black pixels do not actually burn and consume energy, this saves battery life. In addition, it is sometimes argued that using dark mode apps is less damaging to sleep and vision, although these claims have not been conclusively proven. Of course, for most users – it just looks cool.
